The "Shrine of the Four Pillars" Festival

Posted on 2025.09.22 in Events

Yohashira Shrine sits on Nawate Street, just five minutes from Matsumoto Castle. The name translates to "Shrine of the Four Pillars," reflecting its unusual dedication to four Shinto deities rather than the single deity most shrines honor.

About Yohashira Shrine

Originally established in 1879 during the Meiji era, the shrine fell victim to a devastating fire that swept through Matsumoto's city center in January 1888. The current buildings were completed in 1924. And the shrine has since gained a reputation for answered prayers among local worshippers.

The shrine draws families throughout the year for important celebrations. In May, young families arrive for Children's Day, seeking blessings for their children's health and happiness. November brings the colorful Shichi-Go-San festival, when girls aged 3 and 7 and boys aged 5 dress in festive kimonos to give thanks for their health and growth.

During the New Year holidays, Yohashira Shrine is one of Matsumoto’s most visited sites, with long lines of worshippers stretching far down the street, all eager to offer their first prayers of the year.

Yohashira Shrine Festival

The annual Yohashira Shrine Festival transforms Matsumoto's historic center during the first three days of October marking the arrival of autumn in Matsumoto. Nawate Street and the shrine grounds fill with street food vendors, children's games, and traditional festival attractions like shooting galleries.

The festival's highlight comes with the parade of floats, known locally as yatai, dashi, or butai. These elaborate structures roll through the city center accompanied by traditional musicians performing from aboard the moving platforms. You'll find the most decorative floats gathered near the corner of Nawate Street, beside the small police box.

Evening fireworks over the Metoba River cap off the first two nights, creating a magical finale to each day's celebrations.
