Matsumoto Grand Taiko Festival 25 ~ 26 July 2026

Posted on 2026.07.10 in Events

Every year on the last weekend of July, Matsumoto vibrates to the beat of taiko drums. The Matsumoto Grand Taiko Festival draws taiko groups from across Japan to perform over two days with the grounds of Matsumoto Castle hosting the main stage. It is one of the premier events held in Matsumoto and not to be missed. Admission is free.

Rhythm Throughout the City

The Matsumoto Grand Taiko Festival begins at 1:30pm with multiple performances taking place throughout the city. Groups vary widely from amateur community groups to professional performers. Whether amateur or professional, the passion and energy in each performance are truly impressive.

The afternoon sessions are worth building your day around. Performances take place in various locations including Matsumoto Station, Nawate Street, and Matsumoto Castle. Moving between them on foot takes minutes and the relaxed pace makes it easy to catch several performances without committing to one spot. It is a good way to orient yourself before hitting the main stage event in the evening.

The Castle After Dark

At 5:30pm, the attention shifts to the stage within the castle grounds where performances will continue until about 9pm. The evening starts with individual groups giving 2 to 3 performances each. The second to last act features the professional taiko group, “Kodo.” The evening culminates with all of the performers on stage playing together in an exciting final act.

The second day of the festival finds the performers changing locations. Those that performed during the day on Saturday, will be at the castle on Sunday evening. The illuminated castle provides the perfect backdrop that few performance venues can match. Bring a blanket to sit on and arrive early for a seat on the lawn.
