Matsumoto Castle Illumination
The super creative folks at the Matsumoto Tourism Convention are at it again this winter, bringing their amazing and popular laser illumination display back to Matsumoto Castle. Every evening, from the first day of December to the final day of February, the crown jewel of our castle town will be lit up with colorful lights, floating and racing all over the castle’s black and white exterior. Swing by anytime between 6 and 9pm to witness this unique and enchanting show.
Izakaya Night Walking Tour
To make a full evening of your Matsumoto winter experience combine the castle illumination with a night walking tour of the old town district, highlighted by dinner at a locally-owned izakaya, Japan’s traditional version of a casual pub and eatery. A nighttime visit to the castle is always included in this tour, but if you get here before February ends you’ll get to witness the laser light performance that few visitors will get to see!

PLUS this year, for the first time ever, overseas visitors will have the chance to experience the centuries-old interior of Matsumoto Castle at night! This will be a first-time opportunity for us as well, and we are thrilled at the chance to lead two groups on this special tour, on January 21st and again on January 28th. NOTE that space on each tour is limited to 20 overnight visitors to Matsumoto. So mark your calendar, book your hotel, and experience what no overseas visitor to our town ever has!
